Appreciating the big picture and the detail: ecopsychology exercise
Sometimes to build an appreciation of something we need to look at it from different perspectives. Seeing something from only one angle gives us a limited understanding. This is true of many things in life, whether it be our relationships with human or other nature, or our knowledge of current affairs. As I’ve slowed down on my walks, I’ve found that rather than just looking at the general view in front of me, I’ve also noticed more of the detail. And it is when I’ve taken a closer look at something that I’ve realised just how beautiful and intricate that thing is. Let me show you an example:
Both are valuable perspectives. When we’re stepping back we can see the overall pattern and the context. When we go in close we can see the inner complexity. As a mainly big picture person, I know I can easily sweep over something without much thought. Taking the time to stop and look up close reminds me how amazing even the smallest thing can be.
